Fork Union Military Academy announced today the selection of Brooks Berry to be the next Athletic Director at the prestigious college prep school, following the retirement of longtime AD, Micky Sullivan. Berry has served for the last three years as the Athletic Director at The Covenant School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Berry brings a unique combination of experience to his new post. He is an alumnus of Fork Union Military Academy, having been a member of the Corps of Cadets in the Class of 1997, playing basketball for the legendary Coach Fletcher Arritt. He has been a big-time Division I athlete, playing for Coach Gale Catlett at West Virginia University where he participated in the NCAA Tournament at the Sweet Sixteen level, was a three-year starter at forward, was selected three times to the Big East Academic All-Star Team, and was named Captain of his team in his senior year.
In his professional career, Berry has developed a wide range of skills and experience, having served as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern University and an administrator in the athletic department at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been a color analyst for multiple radio and television outlets broadcasting basketball games, including MASN, Comcast SportsNet, and The Citadel. His career has also included two extended stays on staff at Fork Union Military Academy where he has served as a basketball coach, guidance counselor, and most recently, Director of Financial Aid, prior to taking his current position as Athletic Director for The Covenant School. During his time at The Covenant School, they have won five state team championships in four different sports and two individual state wrestling championships.
Berry would tell you that one of his greatest victories came when he returned to the Fork Union campus to serve as a counselor at Coach Arrit's summer basketball camp in 2000. It was there that he met Amy Arritt, Coach Arritt's daughter, whom he would marry. Brooks and Amy now have three children, and he has described his favorite pastime as taking his young sons out for a round of golf and watching them run, smile, and have fun.
It is a measure of the respect and affection with which Brooks Berry is regarded at Fork Union Military Academy, that he was strongly urged to consider the position at Fork Union by a current staff member who was at that time, himself, a candidate for the position. Brooks Berry has long been considered a close member of the FUMA family, and his return to the campus is expected to generate much enthusiasm and excitement about the future of Fork Union's athletics programs.
