Drill Team from FUMA Awarded First Place in AMCSUS Competition

Members of the Middle School Drill team at Fork Union Military Academy were honored today during Commandant's Call for their First Place finish in the annual drill competition sponsored by the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS). The team's unit leader, Cadet Arkiliz Zavala, from Whittier, California, accepted the trophy from LTC Tony Moss on behalf of the team in a special ceremony held today in Wicker Chapel.

The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (amcsus.org) was founded in 1914 and serves as an advocate for America's premier military colleges and schools. The association includes 25 college prep military high schools and 13 colleges.

he team recorded their entry for the drill competition in November and submitted the video to AMCSUS for judging. The competition was judged on five criteria: the commander's voice, proper execution of the command by each team member, position of the unit commander in relationship to the unit, proper alignment, and all members remaining in step. A card specifying the 48 specific movements to be performed by the unit was unsealed immediately prior to the team's performance.
